This Konko Guro Tsukigata Mizusashi was made on the wheel using red Mino clay and altered into a semi-crescent moon shape while still very soft. The rounded side was hand-trimmed and a foot was then wheel-trimmed. After bisque the flat side was partially covered with Seto Guro glaze both inside & out before the piece was dipped in a clear glaze. Next the whole piece was covered with Konko-yuu. It was oxidation fired to 1220 degrees, creating some amazing scenery as the 3 glazes fluxed together & ran down to the foot.
The deep burgundy colored tamenuri lacquer lid is made of hinoki wood carved by Nakagawa Shuji and lacquered by Ohno Mamoru. The star-shaped handle imbedded into the lid I made years ago using a white organic sticky rice straw ash glaze (named Hakuhen-yuu by Dr.Sen Genshitsu).
This piece can work beautifully on almost any tana, ryurei or even a nagaita, and the star-shaped lid allows it to be placed at any angle, depending on the configuration of the room and the other utensils. This is certainly among my most dramatic & versatile mizusashi made in the past few years!
